The basketball season came to a fast end for the Greene County boys as they lost the first game in Class 3A District 1 play by a disheartening 82-45 to the Carroll Tigers in Denison Monday night.
The Rams, who midway through the season were 3-8, finished the season with a 10-11 record. The Tigers took a 7-14 record into the game.
The entire fourth quarter was played with a continuous clock under the 35-point rule, a first for the Rams.
The Rams played well the first two minutes od the game and were up 6-5 before the Tigers went on a 12 point and the first quarter ended with the Rams in a 10 point hole, 17-7. The Rams were able to score just seven more points in the second quarter, with no 3-point baskets. The Tigers were ahead 37-14 at halftime.
For the first half, the Rams shot at just 20 percent while the Tigers made 14 of 28 shots with five 3-point baskets.
The Rams’ shooting was a little better for the second half, making 10 of 26 shots and four 3-point shots, but the Tigers’ shooting was hot, at 63 percent for the third quarter. During the quarter and until the reserves went in early in the fourth quarter, the Carroll starters missed just three shots. With the reserves in during the fourth quarter the Tigers still shot at 63 percent for the half.
For the game, the Rams shot at 29 percent from the floor, 15 percent from 3-point range. The Tigers shot at 56 percent from the floor and 43 percent from 3-point range, with a total of 13 long buckets for the game to the Rams’ four. The Rams made nine of 16 free throws and the Tigers made seven of 11.
The one statistic the Rams can claim is turnovers – they made eight to the Tigers’ 12.
Carroll junior Kolby Molinsky led all scorers with 26 points, well ahead of his 17.7 point average.
Freshman Trey Hinote led the Rams with 11 points including two 3-pointers. Junior Trey Tucker had 10 points, with six of them from the free throw line. Tucker took a 19.7 point average into the game.
Senior Max Neese scored eight points, his season average. Freshman Lance Hughes made seven points, well ahead of his 1-1/2 point season average. His production included the first 3-pointer of his varsity career.
Senior Mitchell Gorsuch scored three points on a lone basket in the third quarter. Seniors Reid Lamoureux and Tyler Beger and sophomore Wade Adcock scored two points each.
The game ended the season for the seniors named and classmates Anthony Cunningham, Nolan Wilson, and Sico Boateng. Coach Jeramie Hinote said in a post game interview that he has talented younger players to move into leadership roles next season.
